Merfolk
Character Information
World of Origin Ni no Kuni

Merfolk are a race of people introduced in Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom.

Biology and appearance[]

Merfolk have humanoid bodies with webbed feet and fins in the place of ears. They have blue skin in different light shades. They may have yellow, orange, red, blue, green, or white hair. They have a light-colored scale under each eye that stands out from their main skin color. These scales are usually pink, with some exceptions.

Merfolk are able to live underwater or on land.

Society and culture[]

All merfolk shown in the game are from Hydropolis, a city of humans and merfolk in the middle of the sea. The culture of Hydropolis is centered around harvesting fish and other resources from the sea. They are ruled by Queen Nerea.

The merfolk were once at war with humans, but now live peacefully among them.

History[]

Before peace between merfolk and humans was achieved, there was fighting between them for several decades. A library book in Goldpaw describes this period:

"Humans and merfolks now coexist peacefully in Hydropolis, but this was not always the case—land and sea battles between the two races once raged for a period of several decades. The fighting did not come to an end until a human was able to overcome Brineskimmer’s brutal trial, and form a kingsbond with him."

Three hundred years before the events of the game, a volcanic eruption threatened to destroy Hydropolis. Nerea cast a spell to suspend time in the city. The spell would be broken if the number of people under its protection changed, so Nerea made laws criminalizing sickness, visits by outsiders, climbing to high places, and even love (which might lead to new children being born). A giant eye at the top of a tower kept watch over the town so the queen would know if her rules were obeyed.
