The Miasma Marshes (死者の湖 Shisha no Mizūmi?, "Lake of the Dead"), also known as the Quagmire of Corruption, is a location within the continent of Autumnia. The location is a relatively dark and purple-colored marsh, with a sinister atmosphere surrounding it.
Location[]
The Miasma Marshes are located in northwest Autumnia. It is only accessible through The Road to Ruin which leads from Perdida. Care should be taken when traversing the area, as puddles of the marsh's toxic water will inflict poison onto the entire party if stepped in. Spells such as Draw Poison and Levitate will be very useful in avoiding unnecessary damage if the MP can be spared. Poison-Be-Gone is also useful.
Story[]
Before the Events of the Main Story[]
It is here where Shadar, (then Lucien) after wandering helplessly in despair, was reached out to by the White Witch. Convinced that there was no good in the world he lived in, he threw himself into the Marshes and fully embraced the darkness of his despair, leading to the birth of the Dark Djinn.
Braving the Miasma Marshes[]
In order for Oliver and his party to finally face Shadar, they must travel through the Miasma Marshes to his castle at Nevermore. Unfortunately, the "Miasma" engulfing the entirety of the area normally makes traversing through impossible without the legendary instrument of the three kingdoms united: The Clarion. Upon the creation of a new Clarion thanks to the efforts of all three kingdoms working together, Oliver and company reach the edges of the Marshes for Esther to play the fabled instrument and dispel the Miasma. At the same time, Shadar hears the call of the Clarion and summons his servant Vileheart along with the Soulsnare. Instructing the monster to "make things clear" with Oliver, he sends it to do battle with the heroes at the giant whirlpool near the end of the marshes.
It is upon Vileheart's defeat that the Soulsnare is left into Oliver's possession, only to reveal the cruel truth of what had truly happened to the Great Sage Alicia in her last battle with the Dark Djinn.
