World of Origin | Ni no Kuni |
The undead are the ghosts or skeletons of mortal people which can interact with the living. Their spirits still linger in the world of the living either due to materialism (as seen with the undead in the Crypt Casino) or due to unfinished business (as was the case with Horace). While skeletons can be seen and spoken to by anyone, only wizards can see ghosts and use Spirit Medium to speak with them.
Biology and appearance[]
There are two distinct types of undead shown in the world of Ni no Kuni. Some undead still possess their decayed physical bodies, while others manifest as incorporeal ghosts.
Ghosts[]
Ghosts are the spirits of dead people. They manifest as semi-transparent images of their living selves.
Ghosts can only be seen by wizards. In order to communicate with it, a wizard must cast the spell Spirit Medium on the ghost. Horace, who appeared as a ghost long after his death, was able to give pages of the Wizard's Companion to Oliver, but it is not clear how he produced them.
Horace appeared as a child younger than Oliver when they met, but later was able to manifest as a ghost of his older, adult self.
Some ghosts shown in Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom manifest simply as floating, glowing orbs.
Physical undead[]
The undead that still possess physical bodies can be seen by anyone and can communicate without magic. All of the undead shown in this state are totally decomposed skeletons. However, when Oliver and his party consume a Poison Apple to take on a death-like state, the skeletons accept that they are undead despite the lack of any change in their appearances, implying that not all undead have decomposed bodies.
Skeletons in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch are often seen shaking, as well as stuttering the "k" sound while speaking.
Since ghosts are seen as customers in the Crypt Casino, it seems that ghosts and skeletons are able to communicate.
