Come, Oliver the Savior! Let me put your powers to the test!

—Gallus to Oliver and his party

The Wizard King is a character featured in Ni no Kuni. He was the king of the ancient kingdom of Nazcaä and was considered to be perhaps the most powerful wizard of all time. Although the story takes place long after his reign, he is considered a legend and is referred to often by the other characters in the game.

Appearance[]

The Wizard King is only shown in-game as his form taken on the Council as the Zodiarch Gallus.

He wears the standard black and white Zodiarch robes with gold detailing and a helmet in the shape of a rooster. He wields the wand Astra, the counterpart to Mornstar.

Personality[]

According to Horace, the Wizard King was kind a fair ruler and a good father to his daughter Cassiopeia who he affectionately calls Pea. His will to protect and save her from herself allowed himself to manifest and masquerade himself as a member of the Zodiarchs, covertly taking action to assist Oliver and his party to hopefully save his daughter from her own despair. While masquerading as Gallus, he is shown to be shrewd in conversation between his other council mates, Shadar, and even the White Witch herself.

He also has a disdain for people that misuse magic and power, as shown by his reaction to Shadar's admission of razing the kingdom of his own fortress due to their foolishness.

Story[]

Backstory[]

According to Horace, who was the Wizard King's friend, the Wizard King appeared in the middle of the Wizard War without explanation and ended the war with his powers in mere days. Unlike any other known wizard, he had the ability to wield two wands: Mornstar and Astra. After ending the war, he is crowned King of Nazcaa and given the title Wizard King. The Wizard King would then select Horace and eleven other magic users to form the The Council of Twelve: the Zodiarchs to serve as ministers below him.

At some point into his rule, he would remove the three magical stones which gave Mornstar its full power, and hid the wand in The Tombstone Trail. The three stones were entrusted to his three most trusted servants: Cap'n Crossbones, Aapep, and Cerboreas to guard.

When his daughter Cassiopeia was born, he assigned Horace to be her magic teacher and gifted Cassiopeia her first wand.

However, the members of the Zodiarch Council would become power hungry and corrupt. A plan was hatched and the Wizard King was secretly assassinated, leaving Cassiopeia alone and the Council of Twelve free to rule Nazcaä as they pleased. The only member of the council who did not betray the king, Horace, fled , fearing for his own life. To cover their tracks the council framed his three most trusted servants and banished them from Nazcaä.

Coming of age, Cassiopeia began to learn of the horrors taking place within her kingdom as the council and herself lived in luxury. In a misguided attempt to solve all of her kingdom's problems, she cast Ashes of Resurrection with hope, only to have it dashed when everyone that the ash touched transformed them into wretches and monsters. The entire kingdom destroyed itself as the populace tore themselves apart. With Nazcaä's annihilation due to the Forbidden Spell, Cassiopeia ultimately fell into despair due to the solitude stretching on as centuries passed. Her own mind and power creating a new Council of Twelve made of illusions in order to serve her new warped purpose of destroying the world and remaking it into perfection according to her. Slowly, her corruption into becoming the White Witch was complete.

Despite the machinations of the council, the Wizard King's spirit lived on as his soul resided inside the wand Astra. Centuries later, as a ghost, he hid himself among the illusions of the Zodiarch Council that Cassiopeia had created. He disguised himself as Gallus, the tenth member of the council with the symbol of a rooster. As a Zodiarch, he would learn of a prophecy about the Pure-Hearted from another world who would be able to stope Cassiopeia. With this knowledge, he plotted behind the scenes to guide Pure-Hearted through their quest in order to save his daughter from her own despair.

Gallus of The Zodiarch[]

Gallus, along with the other Zodiarch Council, Apus, and Cassiopeia first appear spying on Oliver in Ichi no Kuni thought a crystal ball identified the boy as the Pure-Hearted who would one day defeat Cassiopeia. Afterward, Gallus would appear whenever Cassiopeia calls a meeting along with the other Zodiarch Council and Shadar. In a private meeting between Cassiopeia and Shadar, Gallus eavesdrops just outside Cassiopeia's inner sanctum to learn of Shadar's achievement in destroying Mornstar, his former legendary wand.

Using Breach Time, he successfully transports Oliver and his friends back 15 years to before Mornstar was eliminated by Shadar in the present. When Oliver, Esther, and Swaine reach the end of The Tombstone Trail, the Wizard King reveals himself (as Gallus) and explains that it was he who sent them back in time to retrieve the legendary wand.

Returning to the present, the other Zodiarchs start to suspect him of treason, due his use of Breach Time. Brushing their accusations aside, he shifts blame upon Shadar and explains that Mornstar's power is incomplete without its magical stones. Asserting that Oliver and his party are now searching for them, he assigns Shadar full control of the Wizard King's (his) three most trusted servants: The Keepers of the Stones.

After Oliver and friends defeat the three servants and obtain their respective stones, Gallus would later visit Shadar in Nevermore to probe upon the changes that the Kingdom of Halcyon has gone through. Shadar responds that whatever legacy that the former kingdom and its annihilated people have would be the empty citadel they both stood in now. Gallus responds that destruction was the correct choice the Dark Djinn had made, much to Shadar's bemusement. Inquiring about Shadar's intentions for the world, he cites the dark wizard's initial desire to once protect the world, mentioning the inevitability of the Forbidden Spell being unleashed once more. Gallus is rebuffed however, with Shadar affirming both his cynicism in the denizens of the world, and his role as The Executor. Realizing the Dark Djinn is set on his path, Gallus acquiesces, yet chides Shadar for having the rest of the world share his own fate.

The Wrath of the White Witch[]

After Shadar's defeat, Gallus is once more present in a council meeting regarding the unleashing of the Forbidden Spell across the world along with outrage at Shadar's duplicity in hiding the fact he is Oliver's soulmate. With Oliver still alive and a threat to their plans, the White Witch promises a swift death for the savior.

Upon the party's return to the Iron Wyvern and Pea using Sanctify to purify the crew members onboard, he finally appears in-person to the gathered group. Introducing himself as Gallus, he explains how Pea's magic can save the world when combined with the party's power. Pea cheerfully recognizes his voice and calls him "Doodle-Doo", to which he responds with affection. Remarking that the moment that she's been waiting for has finally arrived, he wishes the group well and leaves. Yet another meeting between the Council is called, with them expressing alarm that Oliver's party now had the ability to destroy the black crystals which provide the power for the manna to fall. They also know of his recent contact with Oliver, with Gallus explaining that his presence there was so he could gauge the savior's power. The other council members don't believe his excuse, and the White Witch orders them to be silent before Gallus proposes something.

With Oliver and his party halfway through the Ivory Tower, he confronts the party in order to truly test their strength. Upon his defeat, he finally reveals himself as the spirit of the Wizard King and tells Oliver that Pea/The White Witch is his daughter. He reveals that he was a driving force which helped his journey, sending Pea to provide Oliver with a wand made from the branch of the Nazcaan Sky Tree, All to ensure that someone had the chance to save his daughter. With his task complete, he entrusts Oliver with both with the mission of saving Cassiopeia from her own evil, and bestowing Astra upon him before dissipating.

  • In Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn, the Wizard King's name is Shadar. The Dark Djinn himself, who is called Shadar in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, is named "Jabou".
  • The Wizard King in Dominion of the Dark Djinn is also a very different character who tried to destroy Ni no Kuni.
